15.1. Introduction

Signals are of numerous forms and are used in variety of applications in Science and Engineering such as communications, image processing, bio-medical instrumentation, control systems, weather forecasting, etc. Most of these signals carry raw information and need to be processed in order to extract meaningful information.

Thus, signal processing is a method of extracting information from the signal which in turn depends on the type of signal and the nature of information it carries. The signal processing can be implemented in two different ways:

  1. Analog or continuous-time approach

  2. Digital or discrete-time approach
