14.5. Fuzzy Inference Systems

Fuzzy inference systems (FIS) have been successfully applied in variety of fields such as automatic control, data classification, decision analysis, expert systems etc. Fuzzy inference is the process of mapping a given set of inputs to an output using fuzzy logic defined by the fuzzy ‘If-Then’ rule database. The mapping provides a basis for computing the decisions. The process of fuzzy inference involves all factors discussed in previous sections, namely MFs, fuzzy logic operators and If-Then rules. There are two types of FIS that can be implemented:

  • Mamdani-type

  • Sugeno-type
