5.1. Introduction

Data processing is one of the basic functions performed by a computer. The raw information in the form of data is fed into the computer and after processing this data, meaningful information is retrieved. Data input and output, therefore, forms one of the most important functions in a computer. Consequently, a programming language is useful if it has powerful input–output statements. MATLAB too contains numerous features dedicated to data input–output. It has several commands for data input from the standard input device (keyboard) and for data output to the standard output device (monitor). In addition, it has powerful file-handling features, which make it very adept programming language.
