Chapter 8

1 SIMPSON, Thomas (1710–1767), proposed this rule in his mathematical dissertations on a variety of physical and analytical subjects (1743). But the rule appeared earlier in James Gregory's Exterminations Geometrical (1668) in a somewhat different form. He learnt mathematics by himself. In 1743, he became professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and was elected to the Royal Society in 1745.

2 BOOLE, George (1815–1864), was a pioneering British Logician. He also worked in Algebra, developed an algebra called Boolean algebra. He also worked in analysis, calculus of variations and probability theory.

3 WEDDLE, Thomas (1817–1853), was an English analyst and geometer.
