Thermal Properties

16.1 INTRODUCTION

From the beginning of civilization, people know that materials expand during heating and contract during cooling. These concepts have been used to melt the solids and then to solidify them. Blacksmiths have been using the concept of heat and temperature by heating the steel tires and then to slip over the wooden wheel for reinforcement, and to provide shrinkage fit between wooden wheel and steel tire. Study of the response of the materials is of much importance to design and production engineers. Manufacturing processes like casting, forging and welding can be performed efficiently only after thorough knowledge of thermal properties of the solids.
