Model and miniature effects supervisor Ian Hunter began his career as a model maker on possibly one of the most influential effects films in history—James Cameron’s The Abyss. “I came in and was given a set of dimensions (10-feet long x 5-feet wide x 3-feet tall) and told to make a submarine engine room. No plans, no drawings, just figure it out and go. So myself and a great model maker named Jim McGeachy grabbed a piece of paper and sketched out what we thought a submarine engine room should look like, based on that size and James’ request to have a walkway down the middle.
