In the visual effects world, Scott Farrar is synonymous with the memorable robotic CG characters of the Transformers films. But the senior visual effects supervisor, who joined Industrial Light & Magic in 1981, began his career in the days of motion-control camera and optical compositing. Farrar has fond memories of these days working in the practical side of effects filmmaking. “We were working with hand-made machines that had electric motors,” he says, “trying to print pictures with mattes with unbelievable accuracy considering the mechanics that are required to do that. It’s staggering.”
