10.1. Viruses: The Statistics

Although virus statistics can be controversial, no one denies that they have a significant impact on personal and corporate productivity, as well as increasing the expense of information-processing systems as a whole.

NOTE

A Computer Economics study (one that is disputed by some in the industry) estimated a $13.2 billion dollar loss for 2001 when Love Bug ran rampant across IT systems world wide. This figure was actually a decrease of 23 percent from the year before.

Sophos, a maker of computer security products, noted some interesting facts about viruses in 2001:
