Now that we've covered the general theory of systems analysis, let's apply it to IT systems specifically. This approach might seem like unnecessary repetition, but it's actually an attempt to reinforce important concepts while adding details that are specific to issues you'll face in dealing with security.

When you begin to analyze your network (in preparation to secure it), you'll actually break it down into four general areas:

Data

The nature of the information stored and processed on the system

Technology

The different types of technology used in the system

Organization

How the organization as a whole uses the system

Individuals
