11.4. Users and Groups

Now that you understand the foundation of permissions in SharePoint, it's time to start looking at them inside the SharePoint site collection.

When adding users to SharePoint, Microsoft recommends you add Active Directory security groups (domain groups) to SharePoint groups rather then individual users as much as possible. SharePoint has a limit of 2,000 security principals (users and groups) for a website. According to Microsoft, going beyond this limit has not been tested and could cause performance issues. However, adding Active Directory security groups allows the number of supported users (assuming they are all in no more then 2,000 AD security groups) to scale to 2 million.
