7.1. Definitions and Concepts

In order to better understand the different types of SharePoint sites, it's best to first review some core definitions and concepts.

Site Definition

Each SharePoint site is based on a site definition. The site definition determines what all sites based on that definition can do, what custom list fields exist, what web parts are available, whether any custom features are loaded, and how libraries and lists are configured. The site definition is the underlying framework for SharePoint sites. Site templates are based on site definitions. They essentially refine the potential of a site definition into discrete sites for different purposes.
