C.5. Virtual Machine Best Practices

The following virtual machine best practices are collected from the full recommendations found in Chapters 7, 8, 10, and 13:

  • Construct virtual machines with separate drives for operating systems and user data, and use separate virtual SCSI adapters for drives that have higher I/O requirements.

  • Always install VMware Tools to provide the optimized SCSI drivers, enhanced virtual NIC drivers, the balloon driver, and support for quiescing the file system during the VMware snapshot process.
