11.4. Recovering from Disasters

High availability is only one half of the ability to keep your application/systems up in day-to-day operation. The other half is disaster recovery, which is the ability to recover from a catastrophic failure. Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina demonstrated the importance of having a well-thought-out and well-designed plan in place. They also showed the importance of being able to execute that plan. Datacenters disappeared from the power of these storms, and the datacenters that remained standing and functioning did not stay functioning long when the generators ran out of gas.
