C.7. Monitoring and Troubleshooting Best Practices

The following best practices will help you troubleshoot a problematic VMware vSphere deployment. Chapter 10 provides additional information on monitoring your VMware vSphere environment.

  • Monitor virtual machine performance with a combination of tools inside the virtual machine and the tools in vSphere. For example, use Task Manager inside a virtual machine and the performance reports from vCenter Server to monitor CPU utilization and to identify bottlenecks.

  • Regularly review the levels of the CPU Ready and Ballooning counters in the performance charts provided by vCenter Server. Abnormally high values of either counter would indicate an issue with CPU or memory, respectively.
