6.1. Understanding Virtual Server and Its Requirements

Virtual Server 2005 was Microsoft's entry product in the virtualization space after it had acquired Connectix in 2003. Now a free download from Microsoft's website, Virtual Server is classified as a "type 2" hypervisor. A type 2 hypervisor is typically hosted in software on top of a traditional operating system. In the case of Virtual Server, it runs on top of the Windows Server operating system as a separate layer, providing the virtualization capabilities. Guest operating systems, or virtual machines, run on top of the Virtual Server layer.
