2.2. Preplanning

Companies deploying virtualization or investigating its use do so with a specific project in mind. The project itself might vary in scope, but what the company hopes to accomplish falls into several buckets:

  • Reducing power and cooling requirements in the datacenter by consolidating physical servers

  • Avoiding the cost of deploying new servers into the datacenter

  • Leveraging new capabilities around migration of workloads

Any specific project can fall into one or more of these buckets depending on the budget and time allotted.
