9.1. What is the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS)?

CLS is an advanced wireless lighting technology that allows you to use your imagination in designing "creative" lighting arrangements. No wires are used, and the CLS-compatible remote flash units are controlled by a "commander device", or what Nikon refers to as a "master flash unit". You can use the Commander mode built into the D300, or you can use a hotshoemounted commander device such as the SB-800 AF Speedlight or SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander unit. We'll look at all of these options in this chapter.

At the time of this publication, Nikon is announcing the new SB-900 AF Speedlight. As I've yet to get my hands on this new Speedlight, it is not covered in this chapter.
