Chapter 3. Multi-CAM 3500DX Autofocus

With each progressive generation of digital SLR cameras, Nikon has increased the number of focus sensors and area modes in the Autofocus (AF) system.

For instance, the Nikon D100's Multi-CAM 900 AF module has five sensors and two area modes, the Nikon D200's Multi-CAM 1000 has eleven sensors and four area modes. The D300's new Multi-CAM 3500DX has a full 51 autofocus sensor "points" but only three area modes, thereby making the AF system simpler to operate, yet more robust.
