3.3. Types of Upgrades

Three main upgrade strategies are available to deploy Configuration Manager 2007 to an existing infrastructure:

In-Place Upgrade

This is the simplest method to upgrade SMS 2003 servers and clients. An in-place will retain all SMS 2003 hierarchy, settings, packages, advertisements, and data for use in Configuration Manager 2007.

Side-by-Side Migration

A side-by-side migration creates a new Configuration Manager 2007 infrastructure that runs side by side with the SMS 2003 infrastructure. This migration allows clients to be managed 100 percent of the time while the migration is being conducted.
