Chapter 10. Inventory and Software Metering

Out of all of the capabilities of Configuration Manager 2007, inventory is considered a "core" feature; it is one that, by itself, has made Configuration Manager and its predecessors a very useful product since the days of SMS 1.0.

Configuration Manager has the ability to inventory the hardware and software in client computers. Hardware inventory can gather information from your systems such as the processor, computer manufacturer, and amount of installed memory. Software inventory can gather lists of file types and their versions installed on your computers, with EXE files being the default.
