Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 brought an entirely new architecture to the table. It went from a robust batch processor in SMS 2 to a highly scalable web services architecture. Although SMS 2003 was innovative, it still had to address and support legacy systems.

Configuration Manager 2007 no longer has to deal with a lot of the legacy baggage that was required in SMS 2003. All legacy support (Windows 9x, prior versions of Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, prior versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2, and prior versions of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1) has been dropped, except that you can manually add Configuration Manager site information to WINS.
