In May 2006, during the Microsoft Management Summit of that year, Microsoft announced the acquisition of AssetMetrix, a company that offered an online managed service for tracking computer resources.
About a year later, AssetMetrix technology had been integrated into SMS 2003 Service Pack 3. This technology, called Asset Management, extended the capabilities of SMS 2003 by bringing detailed asset inventory information such as expanded software usage metering, license management, and PC refresh and life-cycle management.
