Discovery is still pretty new to the Puppet ecosystem. It is meant to be the first thing installed before determining how you want to proceed with your greater Puppet infrastructure rollout. That being said, Puppet Discovery has a few key uses:
- Determining what you already have in your environment
- Ensuring that security patches are properly installed on target machines
- Inspecting resources at a higher level, rather than executing on them
