14.1. The Pursuit of a Better Desktop
The pursuit of a better desktop, in terms of increasing IT control and improving user experience, has been going on since the early eighties. This effort has seen many evolutionary steps over the years. Sometimes these steps created unwanted dependencies along the way, increasing complexity and management costs and reducing organizations' agility. These negative effects have led companies to seek better ways to design, deploy, and manage the desktop environment. Desktop virtualization is seen by many organizations as a technology solution that has the potential to help them address many of their business and IT needs, significantly and rapidly improving their desktop environment.
