10.4. Remote Desktop Protocol

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a fundamental component of Remote Desktop Services (RDS). The Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) software that is included with Microsoft Windows operating systems is the actual application that a user invokes to connect to a server. RDC makes use of the Remote Desktop Protocol for its transport. By default, RDP operates on the Internet Protocol (IP) using TCP port 3389; however, this assignment can be changed if necessary. As a point of reference, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has port 3389 registered as ms-wbt-server.
