10.2. History

Remote Desktop Services, formerly Terminal Services, was created in 1994, when Citrix licensed the Windows NT 3.51 source code and developed the first version of the product, WinFrame. Three years later, Microsoft licensed the technology back from Citrix, and Terminal Services made its debut as a product with an operational codename of Hydra, a multiheaded creature from Greek mythology. In September of 1998, Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition became available. At this point, Microsoft had two distinct versions of Windows NT Server 4.0—one with and one without Terminal Server functionality.
