5.1. Failover Clusters

A failover cluster, also known as a High Availability cluster, is a group of two or more loosely coupled machines working together to appear as though it is a single system. A failure of a single component, which would bring down a stand-alone system, may cause only a slight outage of a service, which may or may not be noticeable, in a cluster. In order to ensure that there is no single point of failure in a cluster, clusters generally have multiple instances of the individual components that can automatically take over the function of the failed component.
