Creating and Managing Mailbox Databases

An Exchange server at its core is a database-management server. When we remember the days of Exchange Server 5.0, Exchange Server handled its databases, Internet connectivity, directory service, and SMTP connectivity. In Exchange Server 2000/2003, SMTP became a function of Internet Information Services (IIS). After this brief trip, SMTP is now back under Exchange Server’s umbrella. Many other responsibilities have been passed on to other Windows components, except for the management of the message information stores. Database and storage management is what Exchange Server does best, and in Exchange Server 2010 and Exchange Server 2013 we find some of the most impressive improvements.
