To us, an Exchange server at its core is a database management server. When we remember the days of Exchange 5.0, Exchange Server handled its databases, its Internet connectivity, its own directory service, and its own SMTP connectivity. In Exchange 2000/2003, SMTP became a function of Internet Information Services (IIS). After this brief trip, it is now back under Exchange's umbrella. Also, today all other responsibilities have been passed on to other Windows components, except for one. Database and storage management is what Exchange does best, and in Exchange Server 2010 we find some of the most impressive improvements.
