In 1494, a Franciscan friar by the name of Luca Pacioli, published the 2nd book ever published, after the Bible, on the Gutenberg press, becoming the western world’s first published author. He assembled a math textbook called the Summa de Arithmetica, which in addition to fundamental material on mathematics, proportion and perspective, included a chapter called Computaris et Scriptaris (Computing and Writing). By recording what had been known for scenturies as ‘The Venetian Method’, he made a lasting contribution to western civilization, documenting a method of recording assets (distinguished from income or expense) by building a Balance Sheet derived through double-entry bookkeeping.
