Scrape Off Barnacles
Liz was a student in a training class at company X. She had worked on one particular relational DBMS since she graduated from college and joined the company. During class she did not like when I used other than relation-like ways of depicting sample instances. I would put instances on the board and ask, Is this OK? Liz’s reaction was no, not because of the content but because of the form. She saw the world in terms of those simple tables and thought that it was the correct view. She thought a data model was a means of showing a relational schema. It took most of a week for Liz to begin to scrape off those barnacles and allow herself to think of WHAT without HOW.
