Chapter 5. Script Breakdowns and Catalogs

Breaking down a script is the process of converting a script into catalogs and lists so assistant directors can start scheduling, production managers can start budgeting, location scouts can begin lining up locations, prop managers can start acquiring props, wardrobe departments can start assembling costumes for production, and so on.

Traditionally in film and television, assistant directors executed the breakdown, and all of it was done manually, using boards and magnets and strips of paper and markers. But now that ad-hoc and small production teams are ever more in vogue, almost anyone may have to break down a script.
