New fields of research are emerging with blockchains, most notably, cryptoeconomics, which is the study of protocols governing the decentralized digital economy. With the advent of blockchains and cryptocurrencies, research in this area has also grown. Cryptoeconomics has been defined as a combination of mathematics, cryptography, economics, and game theory by Vitalik Buterin.
