Another possible pain point (if done incorrectly) is network I/O. Make sure your instance has a high-performance NIC, and that your network hardware is solid. A poorly configured or inconsistent network can lead to problems. After all, a distributed database depends on network uptime to be able to adequately communicate with all nodes.
