The Judge
Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum—The 74-year-old U.S. District Court Judge, a Brooklyn native, presided over the Martha Stewart trial.
In 1953, she was one of only eight women to earn her law degree from Columbia University. As a federal judge, she was considered erudite, businesslike, prudent, refined, no-nonsense, and above all, fair.

Martha Stewart—Emerging from humble beginnings, she established an entire new industry of homemaking and entertaining; hosting television shows and writing books; she built a business empire around the new industry. For taking a controversial stock tip in 2001, she wound up in jail, after which she began a remarkable comeback.
