Her first moments as a convict were chilling and awkward.
Martha Stewart had to face her family first—and her family had to figure out how to deal with her in this new disturbing role.
From the courthouse, Stewart called her sister, Laura Plimpton.
"I'm just so sorry about all of this," she told her sister.
"Yes, we're all so sorry," Laura replied.
Stewart heard genuine sympathy in her sister's voice and she was relieved. She was relieved too to hear from her niece Sophie, Laura's daughter, who assured her aunt, "We're there for you. We can make it through this." Sophie told her aunt how composed she had looked on television when she had emerged from the courtroom.
