Almost 30 years ago, professors Raymond E. Miles and Charles C. Snow, distinguished professors at Berkeley and Penn State, specializing in organizational behavior and management thinking, wrote their seminal book, Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process, in which they described four types of business organizations: defenders, analyzers, reactors, and prospectors.

Defenders seek stability and entrenchment.

Analyzers are cautious innovators, particularly “at the margin,” but also favor stability.

Reactors respond to “whatever is happening in their environment,” vacillate, have no strategies, and do not prosper.

Prospectors seek innovation and growth, and take risks finding new products and markets.
