Robert F. Hartley

Sadly, Dr. Robert F. Hartley passed away on August 5, 2012. Those of you who knew Bob recognize his thorough, entertaining, and insightful work on his Mistakes and Successes series of books. He was a kind and generous person. Bob is remembered among his colleagues as not only a prolific author, but also as a caring professor and mentor to many, a great advocate of running, and a loyal friend, husband, and father. He is greatly missed. His family wishes to thank the many users and readers of his books throughout the years.

Bob Hartley was Professor Emeritus at Cleveland State University's Ahuja College of Business. There he taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in management, marketing, and ethics. Prior to that he taught at the University of Minnesota and George Washington University. His MBA and Ph.D. are from the University of Minnesota, with a BBA from Drake University.

Before entering academia, he spent thirteen years in retailing with the predecessor of Kmart (S. S. Kresge), JCPenney, and Dayton-Hudson and its Target subsidiary. He held positions in store management, central buying, and merchandise management.

His first textbook, Marketing: Management and Social Change, was published in 1972. It was ahead of its time in introducing social and environmental issues to the study of marketing. Other books, Marketing Fundamentals, Retailing, Sales Management, and Marketing Research, followed.
