Both major search engines have tools and educational resources for site owners. These tools provide great diagnostic reports, as well as statistics, and ways of providing input to the engines. You can find these tools at:

Crawlability
Every page on the site should have at least one internal link. The site should be easy to browse.
Every page on the site should be listed in an XML Sitemap, which should then be submitted to the major search engines.
The site should be well linked throughout the Web.
Each URL should be accessible and not create infinite versions or redirect loops.
Multiple versions of a URL shouldn’t resolve to the same content, and if they do, canonicalization techniques should be implemented.
