Complementary colors

Complementary colors are those which appear opposite each other on the color wheel. If you think of the wheel like a clock, this would be 6 and 12, or 9 and 3, and many more. These color combinations have special properties and can result in the appearance of color harmonics—the place where the two colors meet may appear to be vibrating slightly, depending on the intensity of the colors. This contrast, or color tension, can easily overwhelm the map message.
