Color acuity

Not everyone sees color in the same way, and as designers of a visual product, we need to take that into account. Around 8% of men and less than 1% of women have some degree of color blindness. Red-green is the most common, but there are other variations, as well. As mapmakers, we have to be especially aware of color, as we often use it to encode features. Red-green color ramps are frequently used to represent positive and negative values of some variable, and may be difficult to distinguish.
