Labeling

When creating a map, one of the hardest and most tedious tasks is the placing of labels. Labels are important, as not every map viewer is going to understand what some features are or what they represent.

When labeling, you want to remind yourself that less is more when mapping. Not every street, park, or political boundary needs to be labeled. The question you should ask yourself is, does the viewer need to know what this feature is for the purpose of my map? If it is a reference map you are creating, you will want more labels as the viewer will be using your map to understand the area of interest.
