In its broadest definition, biotechnology involves producing new drugs and medical treatments for human, animal and plant life. As far back as 20,000BC there is evidence that some members of society had a specialised role in treating those members who fell ill. A cave painting on the walls of the Grotto of Trois Frères in the Pyrenees, for instance, shows a doctor dressed in animal skins. For primitive man, illnesses were the work of demons and the doctor dressed up in the hide of a large animal such as a bear to drive away the evil spirits and also to distract patients from their ailments.
