Primers

This chapter addresses adhesion primers (also known as anchor coats) that are applied to the surface of a substrate in order to improve the adhesion of a subsequent ink or coating to that surface. Traditionally, a primer layer on aluminum foil has been necessary for printing on that substrate. Although such print primers may be necessary in some demanding applications (e.g., high heat or chemical abuse) they are not otherwise needed. The primary use of such materials is to enhance adhesion of molten polymer in extrusion laminating and coating processes. In this process, depending on the substrates and packaging use conditions, polyethylene imide or ethylene acrylic acid copolymers are used.
