Overprint Varnishes and Coatings

This chapter addresses traditional liquid-applied coatings as well as vacuum-deposited coatings. The former have a long history in surface-printed packaging, especially paper applications. They provide specific functionality to the coated side of a substrate (sealability, gloss, and scuff resistance). They are closely related to the vehicle component of inks but of course are typically unpigmented and colorless. The chapter describes that the integrity of the coating (uniform in the plane of the coated surface and consistent in its coating weight) is critical for functional coatings.
