Bulk Polyolefin Resins

This chapter reviews the polyolefin resins, polyethylene, and polypropylene. These are by far the largest category of material, plastic or not, used in flexible packaging. The plastic is made from oil and natural gas components. These are individual molecules, called monomers, comprised of carbon and hydrogen atoms. The resin is polymerized using catalyzed reactions under high heat and temperature conditions to make long chains of carbon atoms bonded to each other. The length and regularly of the chains influence resin properties and the usefulness of various grades in different extrusion processes.
