How might the image shown in Figure 24.1 be described? Clearly we recognize the features of an aircraft. Enthusiasts might recognize the make and model. We could also comment on such attributes as lighting and composition. These aspects of visual perception are a consequence of the subtle processes of physiology and psychology operating when we view the two-dimensional luminance pattern contained in the figure. The processes are poorly understood and are not covered in this work.
