A Designed Life

AN IMPORTANT LESSON for me of a personal nature was this notion of an invented life, of a designed life. And it arose for me in the second year of getting my MBA. Having invested the time and all the money it takes to pay tuition at Harvard, I found myself in my second year going through the motions of recruiting for real companies and being very uneasy about how I could possibly survive working in a real job with—and I know it sounds very self-indulgent—so little holiday built into the design of work, at least in the United States in the 1960s, which was at most two weeks a year, if you were lucky.
