11.3. Early Warning Signs

Early warning signs can be difficult to see. While issues and milestones are by definition visible (though you may need to work hard to keep them visible), early warning signs can be all over the map. When an engineering manager casually mentions in a meeting that an engineer in his or her group will be taking a family leave after delivering some code, you need to find out who will answer your writer's questions about that code after the engineer leaves. Or, if a project manager has trouble getting plans from one part of the development team, you can bet your writers will have trouble getting information from that team too.
