Effective Use of the Phone

Phones should be used for any communications that are not appropriate for email and cannot be done face-to-face. For the virtual team, the phone is used a lot to replace what on traditional teams would be face-to-face communications. Team meetings, client meetings, and even all-hands organizational meetings are done by phone. Sometimes, the phone is supplemented with other communication methods, such as video conferencing or online presentations.

When communicating via phone, pay attention to what is being said, and be “present” in the meeting at all times. When people call in for audio conferences and you can hear that they are multitasking by the “tap, tap, tap” of their keyboards, it is obvious they are not paying ...
